Post subject:  Getting Started in VISTA (User's Guide to Computing)

I am in the process of revising and updating the old User's Guide to Computing. This is the manual that tells new VISTA users about the menu system, and up-arrow jumps, and rubber-band jumps, and roll-and-scroll, and all that good stuff. From what we can tell, it was last updated in 1992.

We will probably change the name of the document to Getting Started in VISTA, which would bring it more into line with other manual titles.

I have removed all the "welcome to the wonderful world of computers" stuff, and greatly expanded the section on security and patient privacy, since those are now much bigger deals.

I've included a section on "locking" your workstation, and I want to include directions. I know how to lock a Windows machine, and I'm fairly sure I can figure out how to lock a Mac. Can anyone help me with instructions for locking a Unix machine? I don't actually have one here I can play with, so that makes it more difficult.

I plan to post periodic updates on this thread, so please check back. And of course, if you have any feedback or suggestions, let me know.

We're doing weekly document reviews at the VISTA Expertise Network to incrementally give Kathy feedback on her work in progress. We've been spending some time with her on the glossary in the last month.

Hi there icekat,

I'm new here and I'm trying to find some material on Vista and this post seemed the most logical place to find somethig. It seems most all the other books / material I click on just say that the information is no longer available. I spent 15 minutes chasing blue sky -- can't we just delete the posts that aren't needed or revelant? Or, who do I make such a suggestion to ??
