Post subject:  FreeM lives once again!

Hello all,

The FreeM implementation of MUMPS, begun way back in the mid-1990s by the mysterious Shalom ha-Ashkenaz, has been brought back under active development and maintenance.

As we are firmly dedicated to honoring Shalom's conditions of gifting this implementation to the M community, we are not ready for a general public release until his conditions for such a release are met, and work is proceeding in that direction, in parallel with work to bring FreeM more in line with the relevant ANSI/ISO standards.

FreeM is a small, lightweight implementation of the MUMPS language and database, with many interesting extensibility features, including the ability to define new Z-commands and $Z-functions directly in MUMPS. It is also unique in the sense that its codebase is small and simple enough to be relatively easy for a single competent C programmer to grasp and extend.

We have a website that includes links to our code repository, a growing collection of documentation, and community resources (such as mailing lists and our public Discord server) at https://freem.coherent-logic.com/.

A few members of the original FreeM team are following our progress and/or contributing advice. If you were once a contributor to FreeM and/or have any interest in contributing or following our progress, please check out the website for ways to get connected to the community.

Best,
-jpw
