platforms: (all FOSS)
Ubuntu Linux 10.04
Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6

Kevin O'Kane has been a long-time provider of MUMPS from an academic standpoint. His version was originally written in FORTRAN but may be written in another computer language. See his site for more information.

I've wanted a MUMPS for the Macintosh for a long time, and I've been curious about and interested in Professor O'Kane's work for a long time, so this is probably my next MUMPS implementation to explore. I plan to download it and install it on my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard so I can explore it.

On the other hand, since as far as I know MUMPS/II is not compliant with the 1995 MUMPS standard, we won't be able to run VISTA on it, since VISTA requires MUMPS 1995. That makes this an implementation I will enjoy exploring but will be unable to use for my hospital implementations.

Part of what I'm interested in studying about MUMPS/II is its integration of MUMPS and the web. Professor O'Kane may have been the first to try to create a web-friendly MUMPS, so I suspect we'll find in his implementation a rich mine of ideas about how to make them play well together.

Rick found a book by Professor O Kane on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Mumps-Programming-Language-Kevin-OKane/dp/1438243383/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1289940429&sr=1-3-spell. I have it here and it looks (to my untutored eye) like it would be a decent reference manual not only for M2 but also for the entire MUMPS language since he notes the differences between the two in the text.

(It's also only $9.99, which seems pretty reasonable.)

I am actually one of Dr. O'Kane's students. We worked together to get his previous version of Mumps to work on Mac OS X and soon will get the current version working.

Also, I've created the Ubuntu Debian packages of the interpreter and compiler.

The old Mac OS packages and Debian packages can be located at my site, http://www.rychannel.com/mumps

I've been looking for a long time for a MUMPS that I could run under OS X. This looks promising.

Ryan, I'm excited about your project with Dr. O'Kane to get the new version of M2 working on the Mac OS. Please keep us updated on progress. I think you'll find a lot of people on Mumpster willing to be alpha and beta testers.

I hate to bump an old thread, but Dr. O'Kane says that his latest source code should compile on Mac OS. He's only up to snow leopard, and I haven't tried it on Lion yet, but it should work.

you'll need xcode installed and the pcre libraries for mac os.

Instructions are at my website rychannel.com/mumps but the links on there point to old version.
