I've spoken to Rick about this. I'll throw it out to the group for your comments.

ESI Technology Inc. dedicated the last 26 years to providing the MUMPS community with training services. The VA, IHS, DOD, and many large commercial organizations have used ESI's services over the years. After a long run, Brenda and I decided to shut the company down permanently. However, within that time we developed some valuable training and software resources that we are going to make available to the new MUMPS Users Group. Materials include student guides, workshop exercises, course and series descriptions as well as marketing material. The materials fall into two categories:
. Lecture Workshop Courses
. Computer Based Instruction Courses

Lecture Workshop Courses

Listed below are all the current courses. Each one has a Student Guide and Workshop Exercises. Some are more relevant than others in todays market.
. M Programming I
. M Programming II
. File Manager for Users
. File Manager for Programmers
. Object Oriented Concepts
. Object Technology Seminar
. EsiObjects Application Workshop
. EsiObjects Class Development
. EsiObjects Programming
. MWAPI for Programmers
. Cache System Management
. Cache Application Development
. VAX DSM System Management
. VMS System Management
. VMS Performance
. MSM System Management

For a description of these courses, go to:

Computer Based Instruction (CBI)

The CBI Authoring and Delivery System is a MUMPS application. The Authoring component was never released and only used by developers who created the course content. The Delivery system is distributed with the course content and core to its operation.
The content is delivered via a VT220 terminal emulator. Although based upon old technology, the content is extremely extensive and comprehensive. Presentation features were added to enhance the delivery of content such as:
. Extensive line drawing and renditions (bold and reverse video.).
. Simulations of concepts
. Animations
. Interactive quizzes with branching logic.
. Within the MUMPS courses:
- Interactive execution of code with error handling feedback.
- An integrated full screen editor that lets the student write MUMPS programs and execute them interactively.
. Within the File Manager Courses:
- File Manager is called interactively permitting the student to execute workshop exercises in line.

The following CBI courses are available. Some will be more relevant than others.
. Introduction to MUMPS
. Intermediate MUMPS
. Advanced MUMPS
. Introduction to File Manager
. Intermediate File Manager
. Advanced File Manager (needs updating)
. Object Oriented Concepts
. VMS Concepts
. DCL Programming
. DSM System Management

Proposed Conditions

The following conditions are proposed:
. All software and documents are under copyright of Terry L. Wiechmann. If the Mumpster group is successful and the course material is used, we will donate the materials to the group - as they say, can't take it with you. :(
. The MUMPS Users Group will be granted the right to copy all written material for it's use in their training programs.
. The MUMPS Users Group has the right to install the CBI software on a central server permitting access to students as they see fit.
. I will dedicate the next 3 months while in Florida to cleaning up the student guides and CBI Software. Volunteers will be greatly appreciated.

Comments please...

Wow! As a budding Mumpster, I'm very excited by this offer!

Thank you so much for making this huge contribution to the community.

I don't have much time to volunteer for this effort but I could probably contribute a couple hours a week if there's something you would like me to copyedit or review for clarity. . . I'm not sure what else I could do since I'm just starting to learn how to write small routines in MUMPS but if there's something I can do I would be happy to help.

I will need someone to review and critique the course material once I convert it. As someone who is learning the language, we can benefit from your perspective. Most of these courses have been used extensively, but that certainly does not mean they are perfect. Additionally, there is the problem of teaching MUMPS in a modern context. We will have to evolve them in that direction.

Terry and I have agreed that the third-generation Paideia will be run using the materials he's updating now according to the conditions he set. He'll definitely be looking for volunteers to help him review the chapters as he updates them; we plan to do that work here on Mumpster in threads in this discussion forum.

Postscript: First-generation Paideia was the weekly calls and e-mail lists we ran from 2007 to 2010. Second-generation is what we're starting this week using Mumpster and the MUMPS 1995 Workbook. When we switch over to using Terry's materials for our third generation, we'll continue using the Mumpster and Paideia server format, just swapping out the workbook, which will remain in print as a student resource.

I'm about to release the first review copy of the MUMPS Programming I Student Guide (PDF).

Per our discussion Rick, it would be nice to have an SVN set up that is accessible to members so they can pull it out at their leisure. I would like to avoid using email.

Additionally, what thread would you like use to us for review comments?

Terry

Actually, I set up two SVN projects on my Dreamhost site.

The first is a private development project and will require login by those working on the projects. If you wish to contribute to this effort, please let me know. I'll give you a username, password, url, etc.

The second project is also private but will contain all the releasable material (pdf's, etc.). Who is given access to this project is up to Rick and company.

Comments welcome...

Terry

Dear Terry,

I think you have already done the right thing.

Rather than trying to host private repositories, I am strongly
encouraging folks to consider leveraging existing open source
repositories, e.g.: sf.net (svn), github (git), bitbucket (hg) for
their repositories.

I would not have all of my eggs *only* in the public "baskets",
but would keep a private copy of everything (periodic snapshot)
so that nothing gets lost in case something bad were to happen.

Please let me know the URIs and rules so that we can make some
links to your CBI material from mumps.org too. TIA!

Cheers,
--ldl
