This course is designed for those individuals who want to learn how to program using the MUMPS language. Upon completion of the course, you should be able to write executable MUMPS programs.

Expectations

Some expectations to keep in mind:
  • Read the front matter in the student guide. Understand the course description and objectives. This course covers the basics of MUMPS. You will be expected to use a MUMPS system to perform the assigned exercises.
  • This is not a forum for discussing new language elements of the MUMPS language. The discussion should be confined to the 1995 standard. We will not differentiate between standard submissions. This will complicate the learning process.
  • Since the course is based upon the standard definitions, we will often make reference to the metalanguage used to describe MUMPS. However, most people are never exposed to this language and will find it confusing. Don't worry about it – it is not necessary for knowing how to write code.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment. Having the programming prompt at your fingertips makes learning the language much easier. Use it.

Preparation

In preparation for getting started, do the following:

Approach

We will use the following tentative approach:
  • The student should use the MUMPS Programming I Student Guide as a guide for the course. It can be downloaded from the Web.
  • I will provide the instructional information as individual lessons topics. Please confine your questions and comments to the appropriate thread and avoid creating new threads. It will make the presentation much more navigable and less confusing.

Next Assignment

Download the MUMPS Programming Student Guide even if you did it before since some typo's and structural changes have been made. Read Unit 1: The MUMPS Environment – this will be the first unit we will cover.

Explanatory information for Unit 1 will be posted as a separate lesson thread and will be used for discussion and comments.
