Hi,

After spending several years working in the UNIX and C environment... In 1991 a friend offered me a temporary job using this old/obsolete language called MUMPS.

Several of my technical friends (who, believed as I did) that UNIX and C were the future, wondered why I would waste my time hacking MUMPS.

Well, that short term gig did complete. Because of the few months of MUMPS that I had, I landed a MUMPS gig that lasted for 15 years. Following that I have been an independent MUMPS (and UNIX and C) contractor.

Backing up a bit, in early 1992 the MDC had a meeting in the town where I was living, and that is where I met most of those "old timers" hanging out here (Rick, Chris, Terry, el al).

Having been on the IEEE P-1003 POSIX committee, I was naturally drawn to the MDC, and became a "groupie" (the firm for which I worked would not commit to my involvement with the MDC, so I had to use vacation and mostly paid my own way to attend the MDC Meetings).

My primary interest is in MUMPS: the language and the implementation. I have found that my UNIX and C skills have been helpful. Relative to the current MUMPS Development Crew activities, I am the "Station Chief" for the MDC Reference Implementation (formerly known as mumpsv1, graciously donated by Ray Neuman).

Beginning January 1, 2011, I am intending to be entering "retirement Phase 2":
- phase 1 - doing what you want from where you want to do it, but hours are fixed
- phase 2 - doing what you want from where you want to do it, but hours are flexible
- phase 3 - doing what you want from where you want to do it, but hours are unscheduled
which I expect will allow me more time to work on things of my choice.

For those that think there is no future in MUMPS, consider that, for me, since 1991 (when MUMPS was called "old and obsolete"), MUMPS has paid all the bills... and continues to look like a good and fun place to be.

Cheers,
--ldl

Welcome to Mumpster, Larry, I mean Gus, I mean LD, I mean whoever you are!

Larry is another part of the team that put together the Mumpster and MUG sites. He's also chair of WorldVistA and active in the new MDC - he's station chief of the reference-implementation team (which means he and his team will be working on testing out MUMPS extensions by implementing them in MUMPS V1 to see how they work in practice) as well as a member of Art Smith's validation-suite team.

Gus is also a unix system manager and the founder and owner of Fourth Watch Software.

Further, LD is a weirdo, as all mumpsters are. He originally taught himself MUMPS from my 1995 Standard MUMPS Pocket Guide, which I assure you was not what it was designed for. Now whenever we work on pocket-guide updates we have to take into account explaining things not only concisely but also well enough that if some crazy person wants to use it to teach himself MUMPS he'll stand a chance even if he's not Larry.

Gus is also a generally happy, friendly, easy-going, and generous guy (all of which the community appreciates), though LD does take unix system management very seriously (which we also appreciate).
