Hello,

I'm a Cache System Administrator and Programmer for hospitals and physician practices using Epic and GE/IDX. Most of my background is with IDX (aka "Centricity"), with about 8 years total doing sys admin work (more as an analyst) and only about 2 years with Epic at Swedish Hospital here in Seattle. I've never worked with a VistA implementation professionally.

Unfortunately because I am a Sys Admin, my job is to keep the system running smoothly, not to program in M full-time. My typical work break-down is:

50% "My printer is broken"
25% Shell scripting (KSH/Expect)
10% VB-style automation
10% Cache System Maintenance
5% M programming

I attribute the 50% figure to the fact that while I work in a shop that supports about 700 users daily, only myself and the UNIX SA really know what it means when I say "AIX box". This scenario of under-staffing technical people and not training up new ones is systemic in the for/non-profit hospital world. It's also one of the reasons why I see a trend to remotely host and support Cache-based applications in the future.

Anyway if there's anyone on here with questions about other commercially available M/Cache-based software (I even know a little about Meditech and McKesson/STAR HBOC), I might have some insight...

Outside of M, I've been living out here in Seattle for about 15 years now after bumming around the Northeast and Caribbean until my early 20s. Coming out west was a transformative experience for me and once I was out here I decided to reinvent myself as a true Pacific Northwesterner. As a result the things I am passionate about (computers, coffee, beer, comics, salmon fishing, skiing in the rain...) are text-book Seattle cliches. Oh well...I like it here.

Cheers!

Pete

Welcome to Mumpster, Pete! I was born and raised in Seattle; part of the reason I never seriously thought about leaving is that I like it here so much! To your list I would add: Scandinavian bakeries and 10-foot-tall rhododendron bushes.

Kathy

Welcome to Mumpster, Peter. I enjoyed working with you in the Paideia course and look forward to our discussions together here in these forums.

I suspect we will indeed have many questions about Epic, Meditech, and McKesson for you over the months ahead.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Seattle so much. We should get together for lunch some time and compare notes. Have you done much hiking yet up in the mountains? If not, there are some short hikes that culminate in spectacular views, when the weather permits.
